My Room

"Everyone carries a room about inside them. This fact can even be proved by means of the sense of hearing. If someone walks fast and one pricks up one's ears and listens, say at night, when everything round about is quiet, one hears, for instance, the rattling of a mirror not quite firmly fastened to the wall." -Franz Kafka

Literary Questionnaire

I got this questionnaire from my mom's blog, anybodyhome. I have a large literary-minded following and thought we could have some fun with this. Please copy and paste in the comments section with your answers.

YOU'RE STUCK INSIDE FAHRENHEIT 451, WHICH BOOK DO YOU WANT TO BE?

Milton's Paradise Lost. I disagree completely with Milton's theology, but the story and the language are amazing.

HAVE YOU EVER HAD A CRUSH ON A FICTIONAL CHARACTER?

I have a big crush on Hermione in the Harry Potter books. I'm such a sucker for smart girls. When I was younger, I had a crush on Meg Murray from Madeline L'Engle's Wrinkle in Time series.

THE LAST BOOK YOU BOUGHT IS?

Fiction: Robert A. Heinlein's The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress. It's one of my favorite science fiction novels. I bought it at Blackwell's because it's out of print in the states.
Non-Fiction: Modern British Classics. It's a cook book, so when we come home, we can show you why we talked so much about the food here.

THE LAST BOOK YOU READ?

Dracula. It was the fifth time I read it and the second time I finished it.

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY READING?

Nothing! But I need to start reading the two text books for my British History and Culture exam.

FIVE BOOKS YOU WOULD TAKE TO A DESERTED ISLAND?

Hmmm. Do I want books that I would enjoy reading over and over again or long books that would occupy my time? Do I want diversion or intellectual stimulation? Or do I need something devotional? Wait a minute, that's five categories.

1. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll. I've read it many times and always enjoy it.
2. It by Stephen King. It's long, and being on a desert island, I would be scared out of my mind anyway, I might as well read a scary novel.
3. The Ultimate Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. The first book in the series was the only extra-curricular reading I did this term. I know there are some rabid fans who would resent my calling it diversion, but I am.
4. The Odyssey and The Illiad by Homer. I can't really have a list that doesn't include these.
5. Jesus and the Victory of God by NT Wright. It's not really devotional, and it's long and intellectually stimulating, but it really reinvigorated my faith while I was in college, and let's face it, if I find myself stranded on a desert island, by faith is going to be stretched.

Now I just need to find a three-hour boat tour...

I'm not sure that I embrace being called "your following" for reading your Blog since I feel its the only option left me given your rather poor E-mailing record, but I will humor you anyway...

HAVE YOU EVER HAD A CRUSH ON A FICTIONAL CHARACTER?

Yes, but none of merit, meaning I haven't kept the books they call home and so I don't think expounding on the subject is worth anyone's time.

THE LAST BOOK YOU BOUGHT IS?

Trial and Error, An Oxford Anthology of Legal Stories (I have started down the road of law devouring my life)

    THE LAST BOOK YOU READ?

The last book I finished is Holidays on Ice by David Sedaris

    WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY READING?

In warning... this is the first time my reading hasn't been directed in a very long time, but there are bookmarks in all of these and I have read from them all in the last week.

Bleak house by Dickens, New York City, A Short History (really a rather long drawn out political history) by Lankevich, The only Investment Guide you'll ever need by Tobias, An Introduction to Law and Legal Reasoning by Burton, A Ruthless Need by Catherine Cookson and I know why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou

FIVE BOOKS YOU WOULD TAKE TO A DESERTED ISLAND?

Th complete works (books 1 and 2) of Don Quijote de La Mancha by Cervantes. (They would be bound in one volume and count as one book.) I would completely buy into the idea that crazy is better and that I could choose to become sane by taking a nice long nap.

A how to book about becoming a fabulous percussionist... If my desert island had nothing else to bang on besides my books I would still have the resources to come off the island with a developed skill. Most music books come with CDs... it would and the reflective surface and sharpish edge would come in handy for my survival.

The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle by Avi. I could read the book a million times and never tire of it. Also, I wouldn't be as scared if it was a pirate ship that came to my rescue first.

A hymnal from my home church up north. Singing to myself is always my answer for how I would stay sane in solitary confinement or alone on a desert island. Added Bonus: In no time at all the Baptist hymns would have the fabulous percussion lines they have been waiting for during so many years.

A Spanish English Bible. I would need it, because I have done such a poor job memorizing thus far. And because nothing beats the stories of the Bible.

Enjoy your last couple weeks... even though you miss GR (I really can't say I fully understand) Why you miss GR might be a good Blog entry (or E-mail)... at least it would enlighten me. The longer I'm here, the less I understand it. My thoughts on GR: lots of colleges, lots of churches, pretty good food, not as bad as Kalamazoo.

    Um, yeah, your "following"? riiight.
anyways, here are my (Eva's) answers:

YOU'RE STUCK INSIDE FAHRENHEIT 451, WHICH BOOK DO YOU WANT TO BE?
How about Fahrenheit 451? That would be interesting. Or would that just make the entire book universe blow up? So otherwise, maybe I would pick Catcher in the Rye because its a great book and its short, wouldn't want to have to memorize anything too long. plus I would have fun with the language and I'd get to be cranky.

HAVE YOU EVER HAD A CRUSH ON A FICTIONAL CHARACTER?
    Yes. Many.
I guess I’ll name a few: Holden Caulfield, Sydney Carton, Strider, Ron Weasley, Mr. Darcy, Philip Pirrip (Pip), Konstantine Levin, Paul Emanuel, Hector of Troy, Mr. Knightley, Philip Marlowe, Hamlet, Peregrin Took....

THE LAST BOOK YOU BOUGHT IS?
"Reading Lolita in Tehran" by Azar Nafisi

    THE LAST BOOK YOU READ?
Last finished....um...I think it was "The Woman Warrior: Memoirs of a Girlhood among Ghosts" by Maxine Hong Kingston. Good book.

    WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY READING?
The aforementioned "Reading Lolita", and "Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell" by Susanna Clarke.

FIVE BOOKS YOU WOULD TAKE TO A DESERTED ISLAND?
Hard question...I guess I would need something for every mood...and I’m going to not count The Bible because its something of a given.

1.Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings
2.Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities
    3.The Journals of Sylvia Plath
    4.Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina
5.Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe (actually never cared much for this book but I think I’d find a new appreciation for it given the circumstances)

While we're on the subject of literature, a note for anyone who hasn't heard about the passing of Saul Bellow. He died yesterday (Tuesday) at age 89.

HAVE YOU EVER HAD A CRUSH ON A FICTIONAL CHARACTER?
when i was in 3rd grade i wrote a book called "monkey mack" for young authors. there was an illustrated scene in the book where monkey mack was in the tub... it was pretty hot.

Ernie Harwell: My 60 years in baseball. the last book bought for me was A New Kind of Christian by Brian McClaren.

    THE LAST BOOK YOU READ?

    WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY READING?
I am currently reading 90 pages of nots from a friend of mines tour of the holy land. I am also reading The Call by Os Guiness

FIVE BOOKS YOU WOULD TAKE TO A DESERTED ISLAND?
I would have every book ever written bound into 1 copy. I would take an extra copy of If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, becasue i wouldn't want to have to search for it in my exhaustive book volume every night before bed. i would then take 3 blank books so that i could write the great american novel.
