My Room

"Everyone carries a room about inside them. This fact can even be proved by means of the sense of hearing. If someone walks fast and one pricks up one's ears and listens, say at night, when everything round about is quiet, one hears, for instance, the rattling of a mirror not quite firmly fastened to the wall." -Franz Kafka

Fun and Games

Christine and I were inducted into our colleges today. Christine will be studying at Trinity College, and I will be studying at New College (which was founded in 1379), so called because it was the second college to be named after St. Mary. One exciting stop on the tour was the cloisters, where scenes from the next Harry Potter movie were filmed.

Yesterday we were inducted into the Bodleian Library, which houses over 7 million books. I don't think we're going to have trouble finding anything to do while we're here.

On a less academic note, we found a chess set at the Hoyle's shop on High Street. It's a replica of the Isle of Lewis (pronounced "Lews") set, which is the oldest known European chess set and is on display at the British Museum. If the pieces look familiar, that's because this is the set that Harry and Ron are using when they play Wizard's Chess in the first movie.
